When the thyroid gland does not make enough of the thyroid hormone you have a disease called underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism.  Hypothyroidism is a common disorder.  Since the thyroid controls how your body uses the energy processed from food, hypothyroidism can drastically impact your weight.

Ny-nutritionistYour metabolism can affect a number of your bodies functions including your body’s temperature, heartbeat, and how well you burn calories.  When you have hypothyroidism these processes in your body slow down.  That means you make less energy, and your metabolism will become sluggish.  As a result, it can be normal to put on weight and losing weight can be even more difficult.

Fortunately, most thyroid disorders can be controlled by medication.  That means that once you have your thyroid condition under control and stabilized there is no reason why you can’t be successful losing weight.  However, you should bear in mind that no treatment is going to have immediate results.  It can take up to nine months for any medication to really stabilize your thyroid levels and even longer for you to feel the results of the medication.

Once your thyroid is stabilized, you will want to find a weight loss program that works for you.  Since hypothyroidism can cause a slower metabolism you will want to select a program that is familiar with it.  This way they can help to stimulate your metabolism and help you to counteract the effects of hypothyroidism.

Be patient.  With a slower metabolism it is going to take you longer to lose weight.  You may even feel like it is impossible to lose weight.  However, if you stick with it and really follow your plan you will be able to achieve your goals.

If you find that you are really struggling with the weight loss, try keeping a food diary for a week or two.  Make sure you record everything that goes into your mouth.  If after evaluating your overall calorie intake you discover that you are really sticking to your weight loss program then you might want to consult with your physician to make sure your thyroid medication is at the correct dose.
