Losing weight while eating anything you want can be tricky, but it is not impossible.  Ultimately, losing weight is about the ratio of calories consumed to calories burned.  If you’re eating less calories and exercising more you are going to lose weight regardless of the foods you consume.  However, eating healthy food like fruits and vegetables are going to make losing weight easier than bad foods like pizza and ice cream.

Medical-weight-loss-doctor-nyNew fad diets come out all the time claiming to eat whatever you want and lose weight.  Or they might have you stick to one particular food or food group.  Ever hear of the cookie diet, or the Twinkie diet?  In theory these are great.  Who doesn’t want to eat cookies all day?  However, they present several potential problems.

The first problem is that these fad diets don’t provide your body with the balanced nutrition that it needs.  A lack of nutrition can lead to a loss of lean muscle tissue and can slow your metabolism.  Your metabolism can affect your body’s temperature, heartbeat, and how well you burn calories.  When your body’s metabolism is slowed do to a lack of nutrition you’ll make less energy, and feel more sluggish.

The second problem is that these “bad foods” are processed more quickly into blood sugar.  Because they are processed quicker they cause an increase insulin production.  This increase in insulin leads the body to believe that plenty of energy is available and that it should stop burning fat.  This is catastrophic to weight loss.  The result is feeling tired and craving more sugary foods.  When you indulge in these cravings the cycle starts all over again.  Essentially creating an endless roller coaster for your body.  In order to combat this endless cycle you need to regulate and maintain your blood sugar levels.

The reality is that you can eat what you want.  If you feel like having three snickers bars for your total calorie intake for the day, you can do that.  However, losing weight will be much easier, and quicker if you eat healthy foods and maintain balanced nutrition.  Don’t deprive yourself of pizza night.  Just make healthier choices.  Perhaps, choose a whole grain pizza with vegetables and only have one slice.  Your weight loss coach will be best equipped to help you make these healthy substitutions.
