The low-carb diet is a fad that some advocate and others don’t. At The NYC Weightloss Solutions, we don’t advocate any extreme fad diets that are not sustainable, such as any diet that calls for a complete elimination of carbs or almost eliminating them completely. Good carbs are essential to your diet and energy level. Getting rid of them totally might be good if you’re preparing for a body building competition, but for most of us, a more balanced approach is best in order to keep the weight off after reaching your goals.

That said, most Americans have far more carbohydrates in their diet than is necessary. If you ask many folks to recount what they ate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner yesterday, a lot of them will have included processed grains like pasta, cereal, and breads into every meal they had. Do you routinely do this? Cereal and toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, and some sort of pasta dish for dinner? If so, you might benefit from replacing some of those meals with these 5 low carb foods!

5 Low Carb Foodschicken-stir-fry

Nuts and legumes – Nuts are a healthy source of fat. Legumes, like cashews, are as well. Many people make the mistake of thinking that fat is the enemy. Fat is not the enemy, but is one of three essential macro-nutrients, along with carbs and proteins, that your body thrives off of. Fat is a wonderful source of energy. The real enemy is sugar. Sugar converts into fat if not used and causes issues like Type 2 diabetes if consumed too often. A high-fat, low-sugar diet is perfectly healthy as long as your fat is coming from healthy sources, like nuts, eggs, oils, or avocados. When you need a snack during the day, have a big handful of almonds instead of a banana or a sugary “protein” bar.

Lean meats – Another massive misconception is that mean, especially red meat, is bad for you. While some highly processed red meat might not be the best choice for your body, it is still not nearly as detrimental as sugar. Nobody gets diabetes from eating red meat – it’s the white bun that is often surrounding it that causes most of the harm. Every meal you have should have some form of lean meat, poultry, or fish. Next time you’re out for dinner with friends at a burger joint and you want to make as healthy a choice as possible while still enjoying your meal, get a cheese burger with bacon, no bun, and a side of veggies instead of fries.

Spaghetti squash and stir fries – If you’re a pasta lover, you might love making your usual pasta dishes with spaghetti squash. It is delicious, great for you, and makes a great substitute for real pasta. Additionally, stir fry dishes are fantastic. Use olive oil and balsamic vinegar, fry it up with a ton of veggies and chicken, and you’ll have a tasty and healthy dinner that will leave you satisfied without leaving you sluggish, as pasta may at times.

Hummus – Hummus is great with a lot of meals. It can substitute for mayo, goes great with eggs, or in a salad. Instead of having croutons on your salad, try putting a healthy portion of hummus in there and mixing it in with your dressing. Delicious and nutritious!

Berries – Berries are full of vitamins and are relatively low-carb. They are also delicious. If you’re a cereal addict, try a bowl of cereal with half the cereal you usually have and a mixture of strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. You’ll feel better about your breakfast and it will still be just as tasty, if not more so!
