Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Not only is breakfast very important for everyone on a daily basis, it’s even more important if you are trying to lose weight.  That’s because people who skip breakfast tend to have more cravings and end up eating more throughout the day.  They’re also known to make less healthy choices at lunch.  If you have breakfast, even a small breakfast, you can control your blood sugar and be more successful in your weight loss.  Following are some tips to make breakfast simple and successful.

cold-zucchini-pasta-and-shrimpRealize that breakfast doesn’t mean the moment you roll out of bed.  There isn’t a time limit to what is considered breakfast.  Even if you aren’t ready to eat for an hour or two after you get moving, that can still be a successful breakfast.  The sooner you eat the better because it gets your furnace going and sets the pace for the rest of the day.  However, don’t feel trapped into a traditional time line for breakfast.

The best foods for breakfast contain proteins.  Eggs are a great breakfast choice because they leave you with a higher energy level throughout the day.  However, if you’re going to have eggs be aware of your cholesterol levels.  If high cholesterol is a problem for you be sure to consult your doctor.

Another good choice for breakfast is whole grains.  Whole grains help give you that full feeling longer.  Many cereals on the market today are full of whole grains.

Recognize that breakfast doesn’t require traditional foods.  Many foods can be great for breakfast but might not seem like a traditional breakfast option.  Consider having yogurt with cereal in it, peanut butter and crackers, a granola bar, or a protein bar.

Be sure to avoid high sugar breakfast choices.  Doughnuts, breakfast pastries, and sugary cereals can undermine your weight loss goals.  Not only do these foods have high calories they also create an imbalance in your blood sugar.  As your blood sugar levels change you will create a cycle of cravings and that can be disastrous if you hope to lose weight.

While your goal today might be to lose weight, the ultimate goal should be living a healthier lifestyle.  By solidifying these healthy habits now you are creating a better life for your future.
