Sugar Cube Question MarkMany of your favorite condiments are not healthy  for you. The worst are actively interfering with your ongoing weight loss goals. NYC’s Weight Loss Coaches at NYC Weightloss Solutions want you to know the skinny on your favorite condiments.

Worst Condiments

Some of the major condiment offenders are:

  • Ketchup
  • Barbecue sauce
  • Mayonnaise
  • Ranch dressing
  • Sour cream
  • Soy sauce and marinades

These are just a few of many condiments that should be avoided whenever possible for healthy eating.

Ketchup and Sauces

Ketchup, barbecue sauce, steak sauce and other vegetable paste based sauces contain too much sugar for most diets. They may have high fructose corn syrup in the mix instead of sugar. A tablespoon of ketchup has about 20 calories.

Barbecue sauce contains a high salt content along with smoke and other flavorings. Both of these condiments used as dipping sauces will interfere with any weight loss program.

Try salsa, avocado or hummus in place of ketchup. Make your own salsa from chopped tomatoes, onion. chili peppers and cilantro. This will stimulate your metabolism instead of adding calories.

Mayonnaise, Dressings and Sandwich Spreads

These are fat. Many mayonnaise products are made with soybean oil, sugar and salt. They may contain artificial flavorings and additives as well.

Mayonnaise is mixed with ketchup and sweet relish for Thousand Island dressing. This is a sugary mix that you don’t need.

Ranch dressing is another condiment that is loaded with salt and calories. Make your own oil and vinegar dressing. It’s easy and flavorful.  Combine olive oil with balsamic or apple cider vinegar for a tasty dressing that is high in unsaturated fat. Add a little pure mustard and herbs for more flavor.

Sour Cream

This is a favorite for potatoes, salad dressings and nachos. This dairy product is high in saturated fat. Use light sour cream or Greek yogurt as a substitute for a creamy dressing.

Soy Products and Marinades

Soy sauce is a processed food made from GM soybeans. It is packed with salt. Soy based marinades, Hoisin sauce, black bean, oyster and other bottled sauces also contain sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Organic fermented soy sauce used in Asia is the best soy sauce..

Packaged powdered sauces to which you add water may also have a soybean base along with a high sugar and salt content. Many gravies made from powdered ingredients also have soy bean additives along with fat.

Pesto sauce made with olive oil, garlic, basil, other herbs and spices is a healthy alternative.

Maple syrup may contain high fructose corn syrup in place of real maple. Food coloring and maple flavoring may be added. Read the label carefully and use only a small amount of the real syrup.
